Why Steam Goes Down

Steam is the world's largest gaming platform with over 130 million monthly active users. Valve's infrastructure spans dozens of data centers worldwide, but even it is not immune to outages. Downtime causes fall into two categories: scheduled and unscheduled.

Valve performs scheduled maintenance weekly on Tuesdays, typically around 6:00 PM UTC. It lasts 5 to 15 minutes and affects various components: sometimes only login goes down, sometimes the entire store. Unscheduled outages most often occur during major sale launches (Summer Sale, Winter Sale), AAA game releases, or DDoS attacks on the infrastructure.

Steam Server Infrastructure

Steam is not a single server but several independent systems. The Store (store.steampowered.com) handles game and DLC purchases. The Community (steamcommunity.com) manages profiles, inventory, the marketplace, and the workshop. Login (login.steampowered.com) handles account authentication and Steam Guard. The Steam API provides integration with third-party services — from price trackers to anti-cheat systems.

Each of these systems runs on separate server clusters. When the community goes down, the store keeps working, and vice versa. This is why separate monitoring matters — a general "Steam is working" status does not tell the full story.

Regional Availability

Steam availability varies by region. Valve uses a CDN network with servers in Europe, North America, Asia, and other regions. Users connect to the nearest data center, so backbone network issues between your country and the nearest Steam servers can cause slowdowns or complete unavailability — even if the rest of the world is unaffected.

Our monitoring runs from a server in Moscow, so the results are most relevant for users in Russia and nearby regions. If Steam is down for you but everything looks green here — the issue is likely with your local network, ISP, or VPN settings.

Troubleshooting Steam Issues on Your End

If Steam servers are working but your client won't connect — start simple: restart Steam, check your internet connection, temporarily disable your VPN or antivirus. If that doesn't help, open Steam settings, go to "Downloads" and clear the cache. Also try changing the download region to the nearest one.

If the Steam website opens in your browser but the client won't connect — the issue may be a firewall or blocked ports. Steam uses UDP ports 27015-27050 and TCP port 443. Make sure they are not blocked by your router or corporate network.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do the colors on the uptime bar mean?

The bar under each card is divided into 48 segments — one for every 30 minutes over the last 24 hours. A green segment means the service was available during that period. Red means it was completely unavailable. Yellow means intermittent issues: some checks passed, some didn't. Gray means no data is available for that period yet.

What is response time and why does it fluctuate?

Response time is how many milliseconds our server waited for a reply from Steam. Normal values range from 200 to 800 ms. Spikes above 1000 ms indicate heavy load on Steam servers or network issues. If response time is steadily climbing, an outage may be imminent.

Do Steam sales affect server performance?

Yes. In the first hours of major sales (Summer Sale, Winter Sale, Autumn Sale), store servers are often overloaded. Pages load slowly and the cart may not work. Valve usually stabilizes the load within 1-2 hours. Tip: don't rush to buy in the first minutes — prices won't change, but servers will settle down.

Can I get notifications about Steam outages?

We don't send push notifications yet, but you can bookmark this page. It updates automatically every 30 seconds — just keep the tab open to see the current status in real time without reloading.

Steam is working but games won't launch — is it related?

Not necessarily. We monitor Steam web services, not game servers for specific titles. If the Steam client works fine but a game won't launch, the problem is most likely with the game itself, your hardware, or the anti-cheat system. Try verifying game files through Steam: right-click the game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify Integrity.

Which DNS should I use for Steam?

If Steam won't open due to your ISP's DNS issues, switch to a public DNS: Google (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4), Cloudflare (1.1.1.1, 1.0.0.1). This can be changed in your Windows network connection settings or in your router settings.
