Steam Guard — How to Enable and Use in 2026
Steam Guard is Valve's two-factor authentication (2FA) that protects your Steam account from unauthorized access. When someone tries to log in from a new device, Steam Guard requires a special code from your phone or email. In this guide, we'll explain how to enable Steam Guard, where to find codes, and what to do if you lose access.
1. What is Steam Guard and Why You Need It
Steam Guard adds an extra layer of security to your account. Even if someone gets your password, they won't be able to log in without the Steam Guard code.
There are two types of Steam Guard protection:
Email Protection
- Codes sent to your email
- Enabled by default
- 15-day trade hold on Market
Mobile Authenticator
- Codes in the Steam app
- Instant trade confirmations
- No trade hold on Market
2. How to Enable Steam Guard Mobile Authenticator
The mobile authenticator is the recommended protection method. Here's how to set it up:
- Download the Steam Mobile app from Google Play or App Store
- Log in with your Steam account credentials
- Tap the shield icon at the bottom of the screen (or go to Steam Guard in the menu)
- Tap «Add Authenticator»
- Enter the confirmation code sent to your email
- Write down the recovery code (R-XXXXX) — you'll need it if you lose your phone
- Done! The app will now show a 5-character code that changes every 30 seconds
Important: Save the recovery code (R-XXXXX) somewhere safe — on paper, in a password manager, or in a secure note. This is the only way to regain access if you lose your phone.
3. Where to Find Your Steam Guard Code
Mobile Authenticator:
- Open the Steam Mobile app
- The code is displayed at the top of the screen in the Steam Guard section
- It's a 5-character alphanumeric code (e.g.,
V3K9F) - The code refreshes every 30 seconds — a timer shows the remaining time
Email Authentication:
- When logging in from a new device, Steam sends a code to your registered email
- Check your inbox (and spam folder) for a message from noreply@steampowered.com
- Enter the code in the Steam login form
4. How to Transfer Steam Guard to a New Phone
If you're switching phones, you need to move the authenticator:
If you have the old phone:
- On the old phone: Steam app → Steam Guard → Settings (gear) → Remove Authenticator
- Install Steam Mobile on the new phone and log in
- Set up Steam Guard again (see Section 2)
If you lost the old phone:
- Use your recovery code (R-XXXXX) to remove the authenticator
- Go to help.steampowered.com and follow the account recovery process
- After regaining access, set up Steam Guard on the new phone
5. Steam Guard on PC
You can manage Steam Guard settings from the desktop Steam client:
- Open Steam on your PC
- Go to Steam → Settings (top menu)
- Select Security in the left sidebar
- Here you can see your Steam Guard status and manage settings
Note: You cannot generate authenticator codes on PC — the mobile app is required for that. The PC client only allows you to view status and switch between email and mobile authentication.
6. Benefits of the Mobile Authenticator
- No trade hold — trades on the Community Market execute instantly instead of the 15-day wait with email-only protection
- Faster logins — codes appear instantly in the app, no need to check email
- Trade confirmations — confirm or cancel trades and Market listings directly in the app
- Better security — phone-based 2FA is harder to compromise than email
- Required for some features — certain Steam features and third-party trading sites require the mobile authenticator
